Freemasonry in Maidstone

Unplug. Connect. Give Back. Discover Maidstone Freemasonry

Agricola Lodge No 4501

Experience Friendship, Inclusivity and Mentorship

Consecrated in 1923, Agricola Lodge No. 4501 began as a sanctuary for those connected to the rich agricultural heritage of the Garden of England. Today, we have grown into a vibrant, modern social network of men from all walks of life. While our roots remain firmly planted in our proud Maidstone history, our focus is firmly on cultivating lifelong friendships, enjoying great camaraderie, and making a lasting, positive impact on our local community.

Inclusivity – This captures the 21st-century reality of UK Freemasonry. It represents the deliberate breaking down of old social barriers, bringing together men from entirely different generations, professions, and cultures who would otherwise never meet.

"Bringing Maidstone together—building friendships, supporting community, making an impact."

Agricola Lodge: Grounded in Maidstone, growing for the future.

"Agricola" translates from Latin to mean farmer or tiller of the land, and the lodge badge traditionally features Ceres, the Roman goddess of the harvest, surrounded by the classic crops of the Garden of England (hops, wheat, and apples).

The Sowing of a Legacy (1923)

Agricola Lodge was born out of a desire to create a dedicated masonic sanctuary for the men who powered the "Garden of England". Consecrated on Friday, 26th January 1923 at the Corn Exchange in Maidstone, the lodge was founded predominantly by local farmers, corn merchants, and members of the horticultural supply industry.

The ceremony was conducted by a towering figure in British Freemasonry: Col. Fiennes Stanley Wykeham Cornwallis (the Provincial Grand Master of Kent, who was later raised to the peerage as Baron Cornwallis of Linton and served as the Pro Grand Master of the UGLE). Taking our name from the Latin word for farmer, the lodge adopted Ceres—the Roman goddess of agriculture—as our emblem, surrounding her with the hops, wheat, and apples native to Kentish soil.

A Century of Growth & Evolution

For decades, the lodge rhythm closely followed the seasonal patterns of Kent’s agricultural calendar. However, as Maidstone grew and changed, so did Agricola. Over the generations, the lodge naturally evolved from an exclusive hub for agricultural trades into a beautifully diverse, inclusive group.
While we remain fiercely proud of our heritage, today’s lodge represents men from all walks of life. We are especially proud of our active, growing block of younger "30-something" officers who have successfully brought a fresh, dynamic energy to our traditions, striking a perfect balance between respectful ritual and lighthearted social activities.
Harvesting for the Community

Charity and local impact have defined our journey from day one. Today, meeting out of the Maidstone Masonic Centre, our charitable work focuses heavily on active, life-saving community support.
This legacy was proudly spotlighted during our Centenary milestone in 2023, marked by a symbolic £4,501 donation matching our lodge number to the Cornwallis East Kent Freemasons' Charity, alongside continuous hands-on fundraising for vital institutions like Demelza House and providing community defibrillators. We enter our second century just as we began our first: deeply rooted in Maidstone, dedicated to camaraderie, and committed to looking after those around us

"Good food, great conversation, and a century of local history. Agricola Lodge is all about modern friendships rooted in a proud Maidstone community." — Senior Warden, Member since 2021

"For me, Agricola Lodge is the perfect place to unplug from the chaotic daily grind and have a brilliant evening with friends. There’s a real sense of modern camaraderie here that is hard to find anywhere else. Plus, knowing that our social nights directly fund massive local causes—like our recent £4,501 centenary grant and local defibrillators—makes being a part of it incredibly rewarding." — M. Master, Joined 2018

"I joined Agricola expecting a lot of rigid history, but what I actually found was an incredibly welcoming group of guys from all walks of life. The connection to Kent’s agricultural past is a fantastic tradition, but our actual lodge nights are incredibly relaxed and contemporary. It’s easily the best social network I've ever been part of." — Robert, Member, Initiated 2000

Our Mission & Vision

WHAT WE ARE

We are a unique members’ organisation that has thrived for over 300 years. Having no political or religious affiliations, we comprise members of all ages, races, religions, cultures and backgrounds. We meet in our individual Lodges throughout the country where we have ceremonial traditions which encourage us both to be more tolerant and respectful and actively to fulfil our civic and charitable responsibilities; we also make time to eat, drink and meet together, and form lifelong friendships.

WHAT WE AIM FOR

To attract those from all backgrounds and walks of life, enabling them to develop into more thoughtful and confident people. To inspire and challenge them to practise the core values we celebrate – Integrity, Friendship, Respect, Service– in their private and public lives. To cement our reputation as a force for good in our communities and society at large and as a thriving organisation that people aspire to join.

HOW WE WILL ACHIEVE THIS

Over the next 7 years, we will enhance our reputation as a thriving organisation that people aspire to join and broaden our membership across all age groups.

What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest social and charitable organisations, with its origins rooted in the traditions of the medieval stonemasons who built our cathedrals and castles.

It is here that a number of the famous elements of Freemasonry find their roots. In the medieval era, stonemasons often travelled around to find work in different locations. To demonstrate their level of qualification, they would use grips, words and signs in order to distinguish themselves from unqualified builders.

Freemasonry uses building analogies to teach members how to lead productive lives that benefit the communities that they live in. In the medieval era, stonemasons wore aprons and gloves to protect themselves while working on shaping rough pieces of stone, but in today’s society Freemasons meet to build friendships and communities rather than cathedrals and castles.
